Cobalt Expands across Texas and Southeastern U.S.

Cobalt™ Hybrid St. Augustinegrass emerged in January 2022 as the result of two decades of dedicated research and development by the Texas A&M AgriLife Research program. Since its introduction, this innovative turf variety(experimental designation DALSA 1618) has been met with resounding success throughout Texas and the Southwest United States.

After clearing the research phase, a 12,000 sf area of Cobalt Hybrid St. Augustinegrass was planted with selected plant stock at Kubicek Farms in East Bernard, TX in July 2020 and designated as Breeder Block. Kubicek Farms is a very high-quality producer that was selected to grow Cobalt plant stock to supply all licensed producers in and outside of Texas.

The breeder block was carefully expanded from 12,000 sq ft to a 10-acre Foundation block planted in central Texas at an adjacent field on the same farm by Sep 2021. When that 10 acre was ready, it was supplied to all St. Augustine Research Group members in Texas. There are a total of 15 members and 11 have already used their share of Cobalt Hybrid St. Augustinegrass Foundation plant stock from Kubicek Farms. Currently, there are 116 ac of Cobalt planted in Texas and Sod Solutions anticipates that number will grow to 150 – 160 ac by the end of the year.

The first Breeder block also supplied plant stock for producers out of state who planted last year and already expanded from that into larger areas. Those growers who have licensed and planted Cobalt outside of Texas include: King Ranch Turfgrass in Florida, Woerner Companies in Alabama, Green Acres Turf Farm and Nimmer Turf in South Carolina and Sodmasters Turf Farm in Georgia.

Many sod producers who have planted Cobalt have expressed their excitement to Sod Solutions about the qualities of the new grass, as well as their plans to expand as much as they can in the coming years.

Cobalt has endured little rain and record-high temperatures in Texas throughout the summer, proving this new variety to be a very drought-tolerant grass.

Sod Solutions will be exhibiting at the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association (TNLA) on both Thursday, Aug. 10 and Friday, Aug. 11 at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio. Cobalt’s breeder, Dr. Ambika Chandra will be at the show and able to speak about the research and development of Cobalt at the Sod Solutions booth.
